Purpose Isn’t Just for Some of Us

your business can be purpose-driven, too

It’s common to associate purpose with specific types of companies.

Those who are reshaping society. Or saving the planet. Or solving world hunger.

Or for some, it’s just a nonprofit thing.

But you don’t have to be a nonprofit or exist to do these things in order to have a purpose or be purpose-driven.

It isn’t an exclusive club reserved for a select few that fit a certain box.

It’s a model every organization — both for-profit and nonprofit — can use.

First, you exist to deliver value. That value comes in many shapes and sizes.

The simplest way to understand the value you deliver is to ask, “How do I improve the lives of the people I serve?”

Many of us don’t know that value as well as we should. That’s why listening is the first step in developing or refining your business’s purpose.

Once you know your purpose, then everything you do needs to drive you toward fulfilling it.

That’s what makes you purpose-driven.

I won’t lie to you — it’s a lot harder to do in practice than I just made it sound. It requires discipline and the concerted effort of your entire team, as well as the right system to keep you aligned.

But it is simple.

It is something that you and your business can do.

And it will help you to make the most of the time you invest in your work.

Pass it on.
